10 Tips for Successful Co-oping

  1. Learn from the children. Respond to and encourage the child’s activities and thoughts rather than making your own suggestions.

  2. Whatever children can do for themselves, let them do, but do not refuse help if it is requested.

  3. Give sincere approval when a child meets a difficult situation: “That was a good idea.” You did a great job.”

  4. Stoop or crouch down to a child’s eye level to encourage eye contact and interaction.

  5.  During center time and outdoor activities be available if the children need your assistance, but leave them free to choose their own area of activity.

  6.  As much as possible, let children work out their own problems.

  7. Never scold or punish your own child. Let the teachers handle any discipline problems.

  8. The children are your focus. Avoid any unnecessary conversations with teachers, parents, etc.

  9. State suggestions in a positive manner: “Let’s do this,” or “Now it is time for….”

  10. Admit, “That really did hurt,” if a child falls and hurts him/herself.

Enjoy School. Let the children know that you like being in the classroom and learning with them.
