Through a developmentally appropriate, theme-based curriculum, the school incorporates language arts, reading readiness, social studies, pre-math, science, music, art and physical activities. Special all-school days, field trips and a creative movement program provide further experiential learning opportunities.
Starting in October, all age groups participate in a weekly physical education program called Jump Bunch. Jump Bunch is a fun, structured program that introduces children to a wide range of sports, helps build coordination, self-esteem, and a life-long love of sports and fitness. In addition, the Firefly and Caterpillar classes attend a weekly music class which is based on the Dalcroze approach and introduces the children to rhythm, creative movement, and pitch.
In the spring of 2008, BCNS inaugurated the Children’s Garden. Housed on the playground, our garden allows the children to experience first hand the life cycle of plants. Teachers are able to use the garden to strengthen and enhance their science units that focus on nature, nutrition, seasons, and the environment.
BCNS teachers closely monitor each child’s individual development. Parent/teacher conferences, held annually for Fish and Frogs and semi-annually for Fireflies and Caterpillars, allow the teachers to discuss each child in depth. Additional conferences may be requested by a teacher or parent at any time, should the need arise. Written developmental reports are provided at the parent/teacher conferences.
Copies of the full curriculum are available in the school office.
